Summer of Sonic ’10: Places to Stay

June 8th, 2010 by t-bird

For those of you who will be travelling great distances to come to this year’s Summer of Sonic convention, you’ll need to find yourself accommodation; not an easy task in London, especially if you’re travelling on a budget! But have no fear! We are here to help you with some good ideas and some great places to stay for SoS!

St. Christopher’s Shepherds Bush Hostel

For those of you looking to find somewhere close to the venue but don’t want to shell out mega-bucks on a bed for the, then St. Christopher’s is the place for you! Right on the edge of Shepherd’s Bush Common – the hostel advertises itself as fun and friendly, with the Westfield shopping mall on its doorstep! Although the hostel offers only offers the essentials (you can however get Wi-Fi in the rooms!), it can’t be beaten for price – even if you are looking for privacy, you can get private dormitories from £31 per person. If you’ve got a whole bunch of friends, then staying here could cost you even less by staying in dorms of up to eight people. Definitely worth it if you’re not adversed to the backpacker lifestyle!

The Grantly Hotel

My pick for Summer of Sonic ’10! Sitting on the doorstep of the Sheperds Bush Pavilion is the Grantly Hotel – a converted mansion that now plays host to a three-star bed and breakfast. With en-suite, TVs and internet access, the Grantly offers you everything, plus your breakfast! The rooms might not be huge, but single room will cost as little as £45 a night over the SoS weekend, with a double costing around £70. Not only this, but you can roll out of bed, walk across the road, and be at the venue’s doorstep! Be quick though – this is going to be the prime location for a lot of SoS guests and rooms will go fast!

The Kensington Hilton

Five minute’s walk from Shepherds Bush is the Kensington Hilton. With plush accommodation, lounges and sauna, if you’re looking to make your Summer of Sonic experience just that little more classy, this is the choice for you! The Hilton offers newly refurbished en-suite guest rooms, fitted out with LCD TVs, minibars, and a newspaper delivered to your door every morning! However with this option comes the price, starting at around £120 a night – you can still use the “Summer Getaway†offer, and get a buffet breakfast thrown in with the price of your room.

Other options:

Travelodge: Offers reasonably cheap accommodation all around London, however you will probably have to take the underground in order to get the venue. Be sure to check underground works for any line closures on the day. Travelodge London Park Royal is the closest hotel to the venue – if you book soon, super saver rates are as low as £42 a night.

Premier Inn: Similar to the Travelodge, Premier Inns are scattered throughout London. Again, you will need to commute to the venue on the day. The closest Premier Inn is the Premier Inn London Olympia. Prices from £89 a night.

We hope this has given you some insight into places to stay – if you find any other great places with equally as cool prices, please do tell us, and your fellow guests about it in the comments!

Booked in at the Grantly so we’ll be around on the night this time!

I’ve booked a twin room at the Kensington Hilton for two people, bed and breakfast for two nights and it is only costs £235.20 in total, which works out less than £60 a night each. Only downside is that you cant change the booking in any way. I booked it through Hilton Kensingtons website.

This article isn’t just great for guest accommodation – it’s also great for core staff accommodation too! Just booked the Grantly for two nights during the event, nice one Adam! :)

  4. Standard T-BIrd. Always looking out for the little guys. Every community needs a hero! lol.

I’m at the Kings Cross Travelodge, it’s pretty good for the price you pay, and the journey to the venue isn’t so bad either.

Would be nice to know if there were some Bedd&Breakfast places over there.

Even with my RyanAir budget, those places are a wee bit pricey.

    But nice to know. Thanks.
